My two travel pals and I learned quickly enough that our destination for the next few days is pronounced ED-is-toe. It took us until about the time we left to become familiar with the "new" pronunciation. But it didn't matter how it's supposed to be pronounced. We were calling it other names, like "Wow," "Quiet, " "Relaxing" and "How have we not heard of this place before."
The names are fitting for anyone not looking for much more than an easy stroll on a wide beach. Uncommercialized and with a residential population of less than 500, Edisto Beach is at the southern tip of the larger Edisto Island and some two hours south of Charleston.
...Edisto Beach
a quiet getaway
Gangly and seemingly uncoordinated, a pod of pelicans takes to the water.
The next several pictures were taken at Ocean Ridge Resort, a Wyndham vacation destination for Wyndham hotel group members. The grounds take up a good portion of the town of Edisto Beach and offer scenes of quiet coves to which egrets, herons and other water birds flock.
This live oak tree, located on nearby Johns Island, is called Angel Oak, named by the family who once owned the land on which it sits. The tree is thought to be 400 years old, and its spread is said to cover close to 2000 square yards. Live oaks are typically wider than they are tall, this one having a height of 65 feet.
White Point Gardens is a pleasant park at the very tip of Old Town Charleston near the Battery.
I didn't spend a lot of time in Charleston, but it was fun roaming the residential streets of the southern tip of the city and seeing the various architectural styles for which Charleston is so well known.
